Have you ever thought about selling a course?
The online course industry is huge!
According to industry forecasts, the demand for long-distance learning is growing fast (over 7% in the next decade). By the year 2025, online learning will be a $331 billion industry.
I’ve been selling courses for over a year now and have made over $3,000 dollars. Not a life-changing amount, but super helpful for my family!
There are course creators out there making over a million dollars from one course.
Have you been thinking about creating an online course? Now is a great time to jump on board and share your expertise!
What is Teachable?
Teachable is an online course hosting platform.
Basically, you get a place on their platform to create, host and sell your course. It is a very user-friendly platform that is simple to use as both a creator and as a user.
You can build every aspect of your course in Teachable. The modules, the sales page, thank you page, everything!
They even host your files for you, even video! You don’t need to load them to a YouTube account and then embed them, it’s all in one with no extra fee.
This means that if you don’t have a website, you can still easily create and sell a course!
Who is Teachable for and how do you use it?
Teachable is for anyone who has knowledge to share.
You could teach knitting, philosophy, how to build a website, use a specific software, write a book, anything!
One of the best aspects of Teachable is that it is free to get started. This means that you can create an account and build your entire course without paying a penny!
You can continue to use the free account when you are ready to sell, although it has many limitations including higher fees.
I prefer to upgrade to the Basic plan for only $39 a month and get access to things like coupon codes and the ability to have affiliates. This does require you to let Teachable handle refunds so they require you to wait 30 days for a payout.
Want to get paid right away? You can upgrade to the Professional plan and get other perks like graded quizzes and course completion certificates.
Oh, and get this…there is no limit to the number of students you can have on any Teachable account! They don’t make you upgrade when you get to a certain number or charge you a fee per student.
And, you can create as many courses as you like on any of the plans!
Once you create your account here, you’ll be able to start building your first course right away.
It’s easy to add video, audio, text, graphics, PDFs, pretty much any media that will help your students learn.
Sales page overview
One of my favorite aspect of Teachable is how easy they make it to create an awesome sales page.
They have a sales page builder that lets you add and subtract sections such as text, video, course curriculum, testimonials and more. If you want to see an example of a sales page, check out this one from my goal setting course.
Since the sales page is part of the course platform, there are no issues with getting your checkout and your sales page to work together.
Plus, Teachable recently added the ability to add an upsell to the end of the checkout process. This is a great way to show off some of your other products to people who are already customers.
Teachable also integrates with other services, such as my favorite email provider, ConvertKit. This means that I can send follow up emails to anyone who purchases a course or signs up for my free course.
They also integrate with Google Analytics and a ton of other software through Zapier.
Why does that matter? Because once you have students, you want to be able to communicate with them!
You can send them coupons for other products, tell them about updates and send them news about other aspects of your business.
Teachable has an extensive Knowledge Base with tutorials and answers to frequently asked questions. This is a super helpful (and free!) resource on how to build and market your course.
They also provide a free weekly Quick Start Webinar to help you create your first course.
If you’ve been hesitant to start creating an online course because of the learning curve, you need to sign up for this webinar. It will literally walk you through all the steps needed to get your course started.
Ways you can use Teachable
There are a ton of different ways to use Teachable’s services. You don’t have to create an hours long course with professional videos. Here are 8 ways you could use Teachable in your business:
- Create a short course to use as a free opt-in to your mailing list
- Use it to sell your ebook or other pdf product
- Create lessons to teach your employee’s new skills
- Create a free course that includes affiliate links for passive income
- Upload a webinar or interview and then sell access to the video
- Use it to host a membership site (you can allow comments on your lessons to encourage engagement)
- Create a long format class with a certification at the end
- Turn your public speaking event into a course
My Review of Teachable
I have nothing but good things to say about Teachable. I have enjoyed using their program and the few minor issues I’ve had have either been solved via the Knowledge Base or by contacting support.
My payments have always been on time and I have had no issues with refunds to students.
I found Teachable easy to use from the beginning. They have made an intuitive program that leads you through building a course step by step.
The one part I found confusing, in the beginning, was how to make the course public. I’ll help you out by telling you there is a big orange Publish button on the information page of each course.
I highly recommend this platform for hosting your own course. The fact that it’s free to get started and build your course means you have no excuse! So start brainstorming all the courses you can create, and get building!
